What's the difference between preventive and corrective maintenance?

Preventive maintenance is work you schedule before anything breaks — oil changes, firmware updates, lamp-hour replacements, load tests. Corrective maintenance is the repair after a failure. Should your maintenance log be digital or paper?

A paper log on a clipboard beats no log, and for a fleet of thirty assets it can genuinely work.   • MTBF (mean time between failures) — running hours or rental cycles divided by the number of failures. A falling MTBF is a unit asking to be retired.
  • Maintenance cost per asset — parts plus labour per unit per year. When it passes 30–40% of replacement cost, replacing usually beats repairing.
  • Downtime rate — days unavailable for rent divided by total days. Downtime is unbilled inventory; it belongs next to utilization in every fleet review.
